GARY GLANT From the beginning, the Glant line has focused on texture and color. Being from the Northwest, I am surrounded by texture. Over the years, I have been able to express my design sense and inspiration throughout the collection so that I have never had to narrowly define Glant. What I find most exciting is the challenge of regularly enhancing the range while maintaining a common thread, so that designers can mix previous and current collections, integrating textiles that are not traditionally combined, creating new, contemporary looks. Our products stand the test of time. We have kept Classics in the line for years while adding new and complementary textures so that our selection is always expanding and changing. We have a component called Glant Modern that was the first to take the exciting new microfibers from the fashion world and develop them into a collection for furnishing. Even though they are hip and edgy, they still look great alongside a beautiful antique. And we produce another component called Glant Couture that is based on traditional fashion weaves and textures. All of our components are interrelated so designers can select from the Glant Modern, Couture and Classic collections to create unique and striking compositions. I have always let the fabrics speak for themselves. Most people don't even know that there is an actual person behind the collection, although they have known about us for years. I often feel like writing them personal thank-you notes for their loyalty to Glant. It has also been valuable to be in the Northwest, isolated from this industry that is mainly centered in New York. I think this is one reason why I have been able to stay fresh and innovative. The beauty of the Northwest combined with the beauty of Northern Italy, where Glant manufactures its textiles, inspires me to create original collections from a consistent point of view. Ideas and vision come from everywhere. Everything, from the beauty of the natural world to the environment in which we live, permeates and influences the work. Following a trip to Hawaii in Glant's initial years, I created a texture based on lava that was featured in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. One summer I visited the Renoir Museum in the south of France, where the inspiration for many of his paintings can be seen in his rose garden. That experience reminded me of my own garden, and when I returned home I designed the "Seattle Collection" based on the colors found there. Likewise, an autumn afternoon walk under Parisian trees and in Parisian gardens inspired the "Paris Collection." Work and life are inseparable, each integral to the continuum and cohesiveness that distinguishes Glant. I have an incessant appetite for design and have built a company that thrives on vital and refined creativity. Glant is always defining the balance between beauty, scale and originality, continually striving to design both ahead of and to the industry. My standards are uncompromising, and I always challenge myself to reinvigorate the design process. Each new collection confirms the importance of offering something that is part of life and culture and that brings joy and inspiration to others. |
